Under the administrative direction of the Head Start Education/Early Childhood Services Manager and under the direct supervision of the Site Coordinator, the classroom Teacher has major responsibility for all classroom operations including, planning, carry out activities, maintaining the classroom environment, supervising children, parent/teacher conferences, and supervision of classroom volunteers and teacher assistant.

 

Head Start children participate in engaging, interactive lessons and activities designed to reinforce key skills and developmental abilities. Our research-based curriculum is designed to help young children develop in six key areas: cognitive, social-emotional, physical, language, literacy, and mathematics. These six areas together, enhanced by our comprehensive services and individualized support, build the strong foundation for learning that enables children to thrive in Kindergarten and beyond.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for Lesson Planning, Maintaining Classroom Environment, Supervising Children and providing guidance and direction to meet the individual needs of children.
  • Manage classroom operations; provide supervision, guidance, coaching and evaluation of Teacher Assistants and classroom volunteers according to program schedule, policies and procedures.
  • Plan and provide a comprehensive program including implementation of HS curriculum, and Head Start Performance Standards.
  • Work in a team setting with all staff to determine individual needs of children. Design and implement plans that will expose children to meaningful experiences. Participate in curriculum development and recommend necessary changes.
  • Consult regularly with parents and appropriate service providers, consultants, and staff regarding child developmental concerns. Facilitate Parent/Teacher Conferences
  • Conduct two home visits and two parent/teacher conferences with each child’s family per year, according to program schedule, policies and procedures.
  • Greet parents and children pleasantly and appropriately, ensuring a smooth transition into the classroom, a positive home-classroom connection and a family partnership. Maintain ongoing professional and appropriate communication with parents. Provide activities parents can do at home with their children to support the curriculum and the child’s learning. Encourage parents to become involved in workshops, training and other Head Start activities.

 

Qualifications

Educational Requirements

Baccalaureate or advanced degree in Early Childhood Education or a baccalaureate or advanced degree and coursework equivalent to a major relating to early childhood education. Must hold a New Jersey P-3 or N-8 Certification and/or Certificate of Eligibility issued by the State of New Jersey Department of Education.

 

Experience Requirements:  

Experience teaching pre-school children and/or working with preschool aged children and families.
