Overview

The Part-Time Peer Counselor is a paraprofessional who has personal exclusive breastfeeding experience of at least six months who has successfully breastfed at least one child, is enthusiastic about breastfeeding, has basic communication skills, and is able to model good parenting and breastfeeding skills. Ideally, a peer counselor is a present or former WIC participant who is from the community where she works and can speak the language of those she serves. Reliable transportation is needed as travel throughout Mercer County is required.  

Schedule:  21Hours Per Week

Hourly Rate: $16.50 

Benefits: Prorated Paid Time Off

Flexible schedule needed and ability to work some evening and weekend hours, including Wednesday hours of 11:30AM - 7:30PM

Work Location: 1440 Parkside Avenue, Ewing, New Jersey

 

Responsibilities

  • Provides basic breastfeeding information and support to pregnant and breastfeeding WIC participants by telephone, home and hospital visits. Travel with the Mobile WIC unit to satellite sites and hospital visits when scheduled.
  • As required by the USDA, be available to follow up with caseload during out of office hours.
  • Makes routine periodic contacts with all clients assigned to her caseload
  • Facilitates or assists with breastfeeding group discussions for participants
  • Is available outside the usual 8AM to 5PM working hours to new mothers who are having breastfeeding problems
  • Keeps accurate records of all contacts with WIC pregnant and breastfeeding women
  • Documents in breastfeeding contacts in WOW and communicates pertinent plan of care information via general notes, keeping client information strictly confidential
  • Makes referrals according to established protocols to the CPA, lactation consultant, the mother’s physician, public health programs in the community, or social service agencies
  • Attends breastfeeding staff meetings, mandatory trainings and meetings as mandated by the sponsoring agency, state WIC office and USDA.
  • Must be willing to work flexible hours, including early mornings, late evenings including Wednesday hours of 11:30AM - 7:30PM and occasional Saturday hours

Qualifications

  • Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma/GED
  • Exclusive Breast fed experience for at least six months
  • Must Knowledge of computers and relevant software applications
  • Knowledge of customer service principles and practices
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) or (English/Creole) Written and Spoken Required
