Overview

The WIC Director is responsible for the strategic, operational, fiscal, and administrative leadership of the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) at The Children’s Home Society of NJ. This high-impact role oversees service delivery to nearly 10,000 eligible participants and manages a multidisciplinary team of 25 staff across multiple locations who are unionized. The WIC Director ensures compliance with all federal and state regulations, oversees complex budgets, and promotes health equity by championing nutrition education and maternal-child wellness throughout the community.

 

Annual Salary: $85,000.00  = 46.7032 per hour

Responsibilities

Leadership & Strategic Planning

  • Provide visionary leadership and long-term planning for the WIC program in alignment with CHSofNJ’s mission and goals.
  • Lead and supervise program managers, nutritionists, lactation consultants, administrative, and outreach staff.
  • Promote a client-centered, culturally responsive service model that ensures equitable access to services.

Program Management & Compliance

  • Ensure strict compliance with federal and New Jersey state WIC regulations, policies, and quality assurance standards.
  • Monitor program operations, data systems, service quality, and caseload management to meet contract targets.
  • Coordinate regularly with the NJ Department of Health WIC Services Unit and maintain readiness for audits and reviews.

Budget & Fiscal Oversight

  • Manage and oversee multimillion-dollar annual budgets, including federal and state WIC funding streams.
  • Ensure timely and accurate financial reporting, expenditure tracking, and cost containment.
  • Lead budgeting processes, contract renewals, grant reporting, and revenue forecasting in collaboration with the CHSofNJ finance department.

Community Engagement & Outreach

  • Develop and maintain strong partnerships with healthcare providers, community organizations, schools, and social service agencies to support program outreach and retention.
  • Represent CHSofNJ WIC at local, state, and national coalitions and committees related to maternal-child health and nutrition.
  • Support advocacy and public awareness efforts for maternal and child wellness.

Staff Development & Supervision

  • Recruit, train, and mentor staff; foster a culture of continuous improvement, accountability, and teamwork.
  • Conduct regular performance evaluations and implement professional development plans.
  • Promote staff well-being and retention through strong organizational culture and supportive leadership.

Qualifications

Education Requirements:

Master’s degree required in Public Health, Nutrition, Public Administration, Health Administration, Social Work, or a related field.

 

Experience Requirements:

  • Minimum of 7 years of progressively responsible experience in public health, maternal-child health, or nutrition services.
  • At least 5 years in a program management or director-level role, including supervisory and budget responsibilities.
  • Flexibility to travel and attend occasional evening/weekend events as needed.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) highly desirable.
